Doula Support

A volunteer Doula is a non-clinical support person who can provide prenatal education, and labour, delivery and newborn care support. Doula services support Midwifery and Physician (Dr.), and Obstetrician care, they do not replace it.

WW doulas have clearance at Burnside, Nova Institution, Waterville Youth Facility, and provide support to people in the community.

WW doulas all have volunteer status at the IWK Health Centre and are volunteers with the Volunteer Doula Program based out of the Chebucto Family Centre in Spryfield.

WW Doulas can:

  • Provide physical, emotional and informational support.

  • Meet with clients during pregnancy and after the baby is born.

  • Accompany clients to clinical appointments and court appearances.

  • Help clients gather supplies and equipment.

  • Provide referrals to other support services.

  • Provide direction on how to access clinical services and information.

Intake / What to expect

Anyone who is pregnant and has or is currently experiencing criminalization may choose to be matched with a volunteer WW doula. A WW coordinator will reach out directly to the client to discuss doula services.

WW doulas typically begin meeting with clients by phone, text email or in person at week 32 of a pregnancy and continue to support to 6 weeks after the baby is born. This may be earlier or later depending on the person and situation.

There is no cost associated with this service.
