Women's Wellness Within founder provides direction for police interacting with women
“Halifax Regional Police were offered explicit direction on how to interact with women and gender-diverse people during Monday’s virtual police commission meeting.
“We wanted to present on the application of a gender lens to arrests In light of the very public experiences of arrests of women and children over the winter, the violent arrest of Santina Rao in January and the violent arrest of the child in Bedford later in the winter,” said Martha Paynter, a longtime nurse, a nursing doctoral candidate and the founder of the non-profit Women’s Wellness Within organization.
“It prompted us to want to speak to the board of police commissioners about the need for gender considerations in the arrest process.”
Paynter told the board of police commissioners that the rights of a child and the Bangkok Rules, formally known as the United Nations for the treatment of women prisoners and non-custodial measures for women offenders, are extensive and direct.
