Wellness Within Pushes for Universal Coverage on World Contraception Day

This World Contraception Day, September 26th, 2024, Wellness Within joins allies across the country in demanding that universal contraception coverage be implemented in Canada as soon as possible. We celebrate and commend Manitoba, who has joined British Columbia in launching universal birth control coverage starting October 1, 2024. It is encouraging to see more provinces adopt provide this life-changing benefit.

This shows us that the same program could happen here in Nova Scotia, and that it does not need to wait. The Government of Nova Scotia is still in a perfect position to enact a resolution enabling barrier free access to birth control at this time, given the clear success of BC’s similar program. Such a program would show great leadership in reproductive healthcare and accessibility here on the East Coast.

Wellness Within eagerly awaits the passing of Bill C-64, An Act respecting pharmacare, this fall. We continue to encourage the Senate to pass the bill swiftly so that coverage can make its way to the hands of Canadians.

Wellness Within is a volunteer-based registered non-profit organization that serves women, transgender, and nonbinary people who have experienced criminalization and are pregnant or have young children in Nova Scotia, part of the unceded and unsurrendered ancestral territory of the Mi'kmaq people.

Wellness Within supports people through the full spectrum of reproductive health experience; facilitates workshops and education sessions; develops resource materials; and advocates for reproductive justice issues.
